Professor Alice Bloch
Professor of Sociology
Overview
Professor Bloch joined the Department of Sociology at City University London in 2003. She has undertaken a number of research projects including research for the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) exploring access and barriers to the labour market for refugees in the UK; with the International Organisation for Migration, examining the economic lives and transnational activities of Zimbabweans in the UK and South Africa; and for the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, exploring the lives and experiences of young undocumented migrants.
She has been awarded an Economic and Social Research Council grant (£289,318) to carry out a study, 'Undocumented Migrants, Ethnic Enclaves and Networks: Opportunities, traps or class-based constructs'. The research is a collaboration with Professor Sonia McKay from Working Lives Research Institute, London Metropolitan University.
Professor Bloch is currently writing a book with Professor Roger Zetter and Dr Nando Sigona (both Oxford University), 'Sans Papiers: The social and economic lives of undocumented migrants in the UK', to be published by Pluto in 2013.
Research interests
Professor Bloch's research explores the social and economic experiences of forced migrants. Her research focuses mainly on understanding lived experiences, particularly marginalisation and exclusion, rights and agency, engagement in transnational relations, social networks and community, economic strategies and labour market experiences and the ways in which they intersect with class, gender, ethnicity and power. She is also interested in methodology, especially innovative methodologies in relation to sensitive research with vulnerable groups, and in developing capacity- building strategies for longer term non-academic impact and engagement.
One of Professor Bloch's recent research projects about young undocumented migrants in England is featured in City's Spotlight on Research section.
