Staff Development Unit

Welcome to the Staff Development Unit website.

At City University, we recognise the value of our staff - the recruitment, retention and development of high calibre, appropriately qualified, enthusiastic and motivated people who are committed to contributing to City's success is key to the future of the University and fundamental to the implementation of any strategy or vision.

The Staff Development Unit is a small team based within the Human Resources directorate. The HR directorate has undergone significant restructuring, which has led to a review of the role and function of the Staff Development Unit. This review is set to conclude in Spring 2010.

The main purpose of the review is to consider the future direction of the Unit in relation to exclusively corporate provision, talent and management development.

Meanwhile the Staff Development Unit is committed to a number of projects and key initiatives. These include:

  • Working towards Investors in People
  • Developing a succession planning strategy
  • Implementing, monitoring, reviewing and evaluating the 360 feedback system for Grade 9s
  • Developing and offering an amended In-house programme focused on essential business critical areas
  • Running the Strategic Leaders’ Development Programme and the Heads Management Development Programme
  • Developing and offering a Change Management programme for all managers
  • Working with ExCo to develop a shared understanding of the role of the Head of Department; developing and offering a new programme for those in that role
  • Developing a Customer Service programme for all professional staff
  • Developing the alumni network and provision for leadership and management development
