City's research pedigree dates back over 100 years. During this period we have made significant contributions through basic and applied research across a number of social, economic, cultural and professional areas. We are proud to have amongst our staff some of the world’s leading researchers, whilst providing a platform to all of our staff across disciplines ranging from engineering, informatics and social sciences through to health, business, law and music to demonstrate their contributions to society and wealth creation through knowledge exchange with business, industry and the professions as well as through the academic development of their specialist areas.

Our staff are drawn from around the world and the ideas developed through their research also extend beyond national boundaries, offering the potential for influence and impact on local and distant communities, commercial enterprises and society at large.

City University London was very successful in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) as demonstrated by the step change in the quality profiles of the submitted discipline areas and an increase of over 50% in our quality research funding.  As we prepare for the next evaluation exercise, the Research Excellence Framework (REF), our attention is focused on finding efficient ways to demonstrate the societal value of our research and the impact it makes on business, industry, government policies and the professions. It is for this reason that we embarked during 2008-09 on a major review of research and knowledge transfer across the institution which allowed us to redefine our research as an all-inclusive set of activities comprising basic and applied research, policy- and practice-focused research, knowledge and technology transfer, entrepreneurship and consultancy. The detailed outcomes of this review can be found via the research strategy page.

Details of research areas and current projects are to be found via the linked navigation menus to the left of this page. The research news section also gives an illustration of some of our recent research findings, innovations and successes.
