Research Degrees

Fees and Funding

Fees

Fees charged for research degrees are determined by the relevant School and vary across subjects as well as between UK/EU and overseas students. You should expect the annual fee to increase each year of your research degree. Information about fee levels for the following academic year is normally available by the preceding Easter from Schools or from the Student Centre.

University tuition fees are payable at the beginning of each year of study although self-funding students are able to pay in instalments. Details of the fees for a particular research degree will be found on the relevant School or Department webpages.

Funding for your research degree

Funding for research degrees is highly competitive. There are always more applicants than studentships available. Each year the University offers a number of Doctoral Studentships, through a central University scheme open to all applicants and through subject-specific opportunities offered by individual Schools and Departments. For entry in 2012 we are offering up to 70 new doctoral studentships.

New for 2012, City is able to offer one City Future Fund Travel Bursary per School for self-funded doctoral students in their second or third year. The bursaries have been funded through donations from alumni, staff, students and friends to the City Future Fund and are awarded to students who could not otherwise afford to travel to present at international conferences or complete their fieldwork overseas.
