Research Degrees

Application Process

Before submitting a formal application to undertake a research degree, you need to find out whether the University can support research studies and supervision in your area of interest. You can browse the research pages in the relevant School and Department areas of the website to find out more about our research, then get in touch with us with brief details of your proposed research topic. You will find contact details in each of the research degrees sections of the School and Department webpages, along with entry requirements and other related information.

If we may be able to meet your needs, you can expect to have some further informal discussion about your research proposal, in particular with the member of academic staff who may be best placed to offer you supervision. In addition to clarifying whether we have the right expertise and facilities to support you, we need to make sure that you will be capable of succeeding in the very challenging process of completing a doctoral thesis.

Once this has been confirmed, you will need to submit a formal application to us. You will find details of the application procedure and where to send the completed application form and any other documentation needed in the School or Department's research degrees information.
