Registration categories

Students are admitted to one of the following registration categories: full-time or part-time internal; full-time or part-time external.

Full-time and part-time registration

Full-time students spend the majority of their working time on research. Part-time students are expected to spend the equivalent of two days per week on research (except DPsych students, where the Board of Studies prescribes the period). This will not exceed 15 hours of organised daytime study per week.

Internal registration

Internal students follow a course of research within the University. At least one internal supervisor - a member of the academic staff of the University - is appointed for all internal students, and more usually two supervisors or a supervisory team. In these cases one supervisor will normally be designated as the first point of contact.

External registration
External students follow a course of research either in an approved educational institution or in an industrial or commercial institution. University regulations allow research students who for academic reasons wish to be based abroad, or whose research requires extensive contact with an outside organisation, to register as external students, subject to the agreement of the academic School concerned. Not all Schools at City will accept externally registered students so applicants wishing to pursue this route should make enquiries with the relevant School before submitting a formal application.

External students have an external and an internal supervisor. It is the external supervisor who provides intensive day-to-day supervision. External students may be required to spend up to four days per year in the University, give an annual seminar on their research, and meet with their supervisor. It may occasionally be appropriate for the internal supervisor to visit a student in the workplace or place of study, and overseas external research students may be charged an additional amount to cover traveling and other costs for this purpose.

If you are applying for external registration, details of the proposed external supervisor’s academic and professional qualifications and experience are required with the application. This may take the form of a CV. Details of the proposed arrangements for contact between the student, internal supervisor and proposed external supervisor should also be provided.
