Reasons to choose City for your research degree

Research that makes a difference
City is committed to research which makes a difference, to the transfer of research based knowledge and to the integration of research with teaching. City's research programmes are outward looking, taking into account the needs of the users of research and matching these to the interests of its academic staff. As a research student you will be at the centre of this activity: an active researcher in your own right and a potential research leader of the future.

Distinctive
City is distinctive - it has one of the highest proportions of postgraduate students in the UK, many of whom are undertaking professional qualifications. The University is located in the heart of London, one of the great cities of the world, and has a special relationship with London and the City of London.

The University recognises that these distinctive features mean that it has a responsibility to develop understanding in its areas of expertise. Through undertaking research relevant to the professions, it underpins professional activities and supports career development. Through undertaking research relevant to the role of London and the life of Londoners, City helps to enhance London's reputation as one of the world's great cities.

Supportive
City University provides a stimulating research environment, within a community of around 3,500 full- and part-time postgraduate students. All research students are greatly valued by the University for their contribution to the academic community and the way in which their studies and interaction with other members of the University enhance its reputation.

Inspirational
The aim of City's research programme is to provide a research-training environment enabling you to develop your skills and knowledge to contribute to research as a professional. The programme encourages creativity, critical reflection, conceptual development and professional competence, judgement and confidence. PhD study is potentially a positive, inspiring and exciting experience, but it demands planning, monitoring, regular formal review and assessment, attitudinal awareness - and plain hard work.

City's location in central London puts you at the heart of business, finance, the creative industries, law and government. The University is minutes away from the Square Mile - London's world-famous financial district - the headquarters of financial and professional institutions, major arts complexes and media offices, teaching hospitals and specialist medical research centres. From networking with experts to accessing specialist libraries and institutes,  London has everything the burgeoning academic needs to succeed.

Industry links
Much of City's research is supported by industry and there are many opportunities for students to take part in collaborative research. A number of students each year are supported by grants from industry or the research councils. Cass Business School acts as the intellectual hub of the City and much of its research is commissioned and focused on the needs of major banks and businesses. Our Engineering Research team also maintains links with automotive companies worldwide for research in advanced engines including Toyota, Yamaha, and BMW.

City is at the forefront of developing new ways to transfer information, knowledge and skills between the University, research organisations, business and the wider community. With support from the Higher Education Innovation Fund, City has established a Research & Enterprise Unit to provide a dedicated location for the University's interaction with business and the community and help increase the range and level of research commercialisation.
