University Research Studentships are available for conducting a doctoral research degree in any School of the University.
Information about the studentships and the eligibility criteria is here. City Overseas Student Awards are also being introduced for entry in 2010-11. Decisions in relation to these awards will be made in tandem with the studentship awards.
The application timetable is in four stages.
Applicants apply for a University Research Studentship by completing the ‘Application for Research Degree Course’ in the normal way. On the form they are instructed to:
The form now also asks that research proposals should be a maximum of 3 sides of A4.
The closing date for doctoral research applications for candidates wishing to be considered for a University Research Studentship is Monday 25 January 2010.
Schools are responsible for short-listing applicants for consideration for studentships.
Since the number of studentships available in any one year is limited, Schools will only be able to put forward a specified number of applicants for further consideration (this number is determined each year under the oversight of the University Research Committee and notified to Schools). Decisions will be made on the basis of the information provided by the School in the statement of support and the application form.
Schools should forward details of their short-listed candidates to the City Research Development & International Relations Office (CRIDO) by Monday 8 March 2010.
Schools should provide CRIDO with the following for each candidate:
The award of studentships is determined by a central committee which includes senior representatives of Schools, chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and International).
This will take place the week commencing Monday 22 March 2010.
Candidates will not be invited to attend this part of the process.
All shortlisted applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application as soon as possible after the decision meeting. Successful candidates will able to take up their place from 1 October in the academic year for which the studentship is awarded.
Shortlisted candidates who are not offered a studentship will of course also be able to take up a place (subject to the School having confirmed that there is space on the programme) if they are able to find an alternative source of funding.
