Getting started

If you are active in research or interested in developing a research profile, there are many and various ways in which the central Research and Enterprise teams can support you. The information below covers a wide range of activities with links to further details available via this area of the University website, so please do scroll down to see if anything is of particular relevance for your needs, or just browse through the site.

Finding funding for your research

City staff have access to ResearchResearch, an external information service which provides tailored alerts on national and international research funding opportunities as well as research news. Once on the ResearchResearch site you need only click on ‘Self registration’ to set up your account and you can then set up the site to your own requirements. Full instructions on how to use ResearchResearch are provided under the ‘Help links’ section.

You can also sign up to a weekly email from us with a summary of the latest information received (send an email to crido@city.ac.uk with subscribe in the subject heading) and/or to an email service from the Brussels-based UK Research Office (UKRO) about European research funding (email fin-rc@city.ac.uk to be added to this). The information on funding opportunities (excluding Framework 7) can also be browsed via a wiki on mycity.

Alternatively, let us know what your proposed project is and we will help you identify any possible sources of funding.

Help with putting a research proposal together

Assistance with the more generic elements of research funding applications to help you present your proposal as strongly as possible.

Help with the financial and contractual aspects of proposals, both in costing applications and ensuring that contractual terms are appropriate ahead of award. All applications for external research funding need to be made through the Research Grants and Contracts team.

Financial management of research

Managing grants and contracts following a successful conclusion.

Making connections

Facilitation of discussions and collaboration with other researchers across City both through events/training courses and by putting you in touch with colleagues with relevant expertise in other Schools, or helping you with establishing potential partners in other organisations (academic, commercial and non-commercial). Contact us on crido@city.ac.uk for support in this area.

Pump priming fund

Apply for up to £5000 to help you develop research which may then attract further funding or is of strategic importance. Particular priority is given to early career researchers although all academic staff can apply.

Good practice in research

Be aware of the University Framework for Good Practice in Research and related policies.

Advice on the University’s requirements and procedures for obtaining ethical approval for research is also available.

Commercialisation opportunities

The Technology Transfer Team can help you bring new products and services arising from your research to market more quickly than you would be able to achieve alone. There are several ways in which technology can be commercially exploited including through licensing and joint ventures, forming a new business in which the University shares the risks and rewards with a partner. We can also offer help with protection of intellectual property.

Consultancy

The University recognises that there are considerable benefits in allowing staff to undertake fee paying consultancy services for external clients. In recognition of this, the University has introduced a Policy for the Management of Academic Consultancy & Related Activities and set up City University Enterprises Limited (CUEL) within Research & Enterprise to provide dedicated support services (e.g. Indemnity insurance) to staff when they undertake private consultancy activities.

Researcher training and development

Activities focused on research needs in particular include the lunchtime Research Seminar Series, for early career researchers, the option to sign up for external courses in other London HEIs, access to Epigeum online skills modules (mainly of interest for early career researchers and doctoral students) covering research skills and entrepreneurship in the research context.

Bibliographic software

City has a site licence for RefWorks which can be accessed online. You may also find this a useful tool for teaching activity. Training events are held periodically plus there is support information available online, or you can contact the Library for more specific help.
