RAE 2008 Results

The 2008 RAE results were published on 18 December 2008. The quality profile rating system used for this review lends itself to a variety of different approaches to weightings, but the Higher put City at 45 in their analysis (up from 59 in 2001) while publisher ResearchResearch's analysis also showed City rising to a ranking of 45 (up from 56 in 2001) from 159 universities or colleges.

This was the sixth RAE since 1986 and the last to be known under this name - the next assessment process will be known as the Research Excellence Framework. The 2008 RAE used the same main principles of peer assessment as previous RAEs, although a few significant changes were introduced. Further details including the full dataset of results can be found at: www.rae.ac.uk/.

City received ratings across 16 subjects, with 15 of these assessed as achieving world-leading quality. The 2008 rating system gave each subject a profile showing the proportion of activity rated as 4* (quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour); 3* (quality that is internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour but which nonetheless falls short of the highest standards of excellence); 2* (quality that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour); 1* (quality that is recognised nationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour); and Unclassified (below the standard of nationally recognised work or does not meet the definition).
