City University London is one of largest providers of qualified radiographers in the UK and has an excellent reputation nationally for producing well qualified, clinically skilled and highly regarded health professionals.
Formed in 1995 when Charterhouse College of Radiography was incorporated into City, the Department of Radiography traces its roots back to radiography schools previously situated in London's major teaching hospitals - St Bartholomew’s Hospital, The Royal London Hospital, The Royal Free and Whittington Hospitals, the Middlesex and University College Hospitals and the North East Thames Radiotherapy Academic Centre.
Our continuing links with these hospitals provide our students with some of the best opportunities for placement experience in the country. Our success in producing high-calibre radiographers has resulted in further links being established with St Mary’s Hospital at Paddington, Homerton Hospital, Oldchurch Hospital, North Middlesex Hospital and a number of hospitals in Essex at Broomfield, Basildon, Colchester and Southend.
The Saad Centre for Radiography Clinical Skills Education offers facilities that are unmatched in the UK.
The Centre comprises seven specialised rooms housing state-of-the-art radiography equipment and systems. It simulates a real hospital environment for our students, giving them access to the type of equipment that they will find in a real life healthcare setting.
The Centre has opened up new ways of teaching and assessing our students. They learn and practice on a CT scanner, digital imaging system, radiotherapy treatment planning and virtual delivery systems, x-ray, fluoroscopy and ultrasound equipment – all before they go and work directly with patients. The knowledge, skills and abilities gained from this experience is invaluable when students begin their hospital placements – where they spend 50 percent of their training.
In addition, the department has one of the few dedicated radiation laboratories in the country undertaking important research projects in health-related areas.
Our three-year, full-time undergraduate courses lead to the honours degree of Bachelor of Science and to recognition by the professional body, the Society of Radiographers, London.
This professional recognition is essential for registration with the Health Professions Council, which is required in order to gain a licence to practise radiography in the UK National Health Service. This qualification will also enable you to practise in many countries around the world.
Our postgraduate programmes are also accredited by the following professional bodies.
City University London is an acknowledged centre of excellence for those wishing to develop their career in radiography. We offer specialist modules and postgraduate programmes that are designed such that the student is afforded maximum flexibility in their choice of taught components. The objective being that each individual is able to complete a programme of study that provides a qualification which reflects their clinical interests and will also be of value to the clinical workplace.
