Welcome from the Dean
Welcome from Professor Theo Farrell, Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences.
Let me extend a very warm welcome to the School of Arts and Social Sciences at City, University of London. We seek to inspire you in your academic studies, to help you reach your full academic potential, and to prepare you for your future career, be it in public service, the creative arts, or the global marketplace.
Last summer, the British people voted by a narrow majority to take the country out of the European Union. In the years ahead, the British government will work with the EU to chart a course for the United Kingdom in Europe. This will be a long process and for the coming academic year, as the President has noted, it 'is very much "business as usual" for City.'
Regardless of what happens, Britain will remain a global leader in talent, ideas, and business, and British universities populated by staff and students of all nationalities will remain at the forefront of this outward-looking country. Located in the heart of one of the great capitals of the world, there is no better time to join City. The university is on an exciting journey of transformation, as we grow in size and strength and enter the powerful University of London federation of higher education institutions. Our staff are at the forefront of research and practice in their fields, and are passionately committed to ensuring that our students learn and succeed.
Your feedback really matters to us, as we are always seeking to improve. So please do look out for our student surveys later in the year, and do please consider volunteering to act as a 'student representative'.
I wish you a very successful year ahead, as you embark on what I trust will be an enriching and rewarding postgraduate programme of study with us.
