About

Background

Dr Russel Lockett holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Physics and Theoretical Physics from the University of Natal (Durban, 1983), University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, 1987), and University of Cape Town (1993).

He worked as a Research Fellow in the School of Mechanical Engineering, Cranfield University, before joining City University as Lecturer in Applied Thermodynamics in October 1998. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Applied Thermodynamics in August 2000, and has been appointed B.Eng. (Mechanical Engineering) Course Director, and B.Eng. (Engineering and Energy Management) Course Director in October 2000.

He has conducted extensive research into the application of laser diagnostics to combustion systems, having employed Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) spectroscopy, Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF), Laser Induced Incandescence (LII), Lorentz-Mie scattering, Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), and Particle Imaged Velocimetry (PIV) in various combustion applications. He has conducted wide ranging experimental research into auto-ignition, laminar and turbulent flame structure, flame instabilities, partially premixed flames, fuel spray mixing in burners and engines, NO and soot formation in burners and engines. He has also conducted theoretical and modelling research into flame chemistry and auto-ignition chemistry.

He has published numerous journal and conference papers in the field of combustion, and the application of laser diagnostics to combustion systems.
