About

Background

Professor Karcanias received the Diploma in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, with specialisation in Electrical (five year degree), from the National Technical University of Athens in 1972 and the M.Sc and Ph.D degrees in Control Engineering from UMIST, England in 1973 and 1976 respectively. His research involved the development of dynamical, algebraic and geometrical aspects of the fundamental concepts of poles and zeros of Linear Systems. He received his DSc from City University in 1990 for his contributions to Control Theory.

During the period 1974 to 1980 he has carried out research in the Control and Management Systems Group of the University of Cambridge as a Research Fellow working on the development of an algebraic approach to the characterisation of the basic concepts and tools of the Geometric Control Theory. In 1980 he joined the Department of Systems Science of City University as a Lecturer and then joined the Electrical Engineering Department of the same university where he was promoted to a Reader in 1986 and then to a personal chair in 1993 as Professor of Control Theory and Design. He is now Associate Dean for Research in the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and he is Director of the Systems and Control Research Centre of the School.

His research has been in the development of the algebraic, geometric and algebra-geometric methods for Control Theory, where three novel approaches based on Matrix Pencils, Exterior Algebra-Algebraic Geometry and approximate algebraic computations have been introduced. His research on the Control fundamentals has been accompanied by an effort to migrate Systems and Control to Complex problems, such as the development of a Control based methodology to Systems Integration and the development of methodology for Systems Based Instrumentation. This research has been supported by EPSRC and a number of EU projects. He has been the author/co-author of over two hundred fifty scientific publications, the holder of a number of research grants including eleven major EU grants and supervisor of over twenty eight completed PhD thesis. His research publications are in the areas of Linear Systems, Mathematical Systems Theory, Control Theory and Design, Approximate Algebraic Computations, Mathematical Methods for Control, Systems Theory of Measurement, Systems and Control to Complex Systems, Integrated Systems Design, and History of Systems and Control. The main drive of his current research is the development of systems and control theory for complex systems by developing the required fundamentals for the new systems paradigms of "structure evolving systems" and “systems of systems”.

Research

Approach to Research

The research has a fundamental research part in the area of Systems, Control Theory and Control Engineering and Applied Mathematics and an applications dimension. The latter deals with the migration of mainstream control concepts and methods to Complex Systems problems, such as Systems Integration of Design and Operations of Industrial Systems, Re-Engineering of Technological and Business processes and Systems of Systems etc. These have been developed through work in a number of large EU projects. The two aspects are closely interrelated and applications have been the source for motivation of a number of the fundamental research developments.

The central idea running through the fundamental research is the role of "system structure" in issues such as the analysis and design of control systems and the understanding of formation, evolution of system structure and resulting properties and the development of the systems dimension of instrumentation (referred to as global instrumentation). Such investigations have been motivated by challenging new paradigms such as “Integrated System Design”, “Complex Systems”, “Systems of Systems” which have played a significant role in a number of EU projects. The term "system structure" is linked to system invariants and the basic topology of interconnections expressed in terms of graphs and structured models. The adopted philosophy is that “structure” defines the central features which determine the nature of resulting system properties and the system potential to achieve a number of objectives under control design.

Significant contributions have been in areas such as: Analysis and Design of Multivariable Control Systems; Matrix Pencil Approach to the Geometric Theory of Linear Systems; Matrix Pencil Theory; Exterior Algebra - Algebraic Geometry for Determinantal Control Problems; Algebraic synthesis methods for control; Decentralized Control; Approximate (Numerical) Algebraic Computations; Integrated Early Process Design and Control; Systems Instrumentation; Control of Structure Evolving Systems; Modelling and Control of Complex Systems and History of Systems and Control. The main driver of my current research is the development of systems and control methodology for complex systems, by focusing on the theory required for the new systems paradigms of “structure evolving systems”, the challenging notion of “system of systems”.
