About

Background

I am Professor of Information Science in the Department of Information Science at City University London. I am involved in research and teaching in three areas of library/information science: the foundations of the information sciences, including conceptions of information in different domains, and theory building and research methodology in the library/information disciplines: information resources and documents, their nature, use and organization, historical development, and new forms; and information behaviour, particularly those aspects associated with individual differences, with creativity and innovation, and with digital literacies - more details here.I have particular interests in information issues in the domains I have previously studied and worked in: physical sciences, specifically chemistry, and healthcare, specifically pharmaceuticals.

I teach mainly on our Masters courses in Information Science and in Library Science. I am also an Honorary Lecturer and PhD supervisor at University College London and at the University of Ljubljana.

I edit Journal of Documentation, and of Facet's Foundations of the Information Sciences series. I am a Council member of Aslib.

My blog is The Occasional Informationist, with more about me here, and I am on Twitter as @david_bawden.

Qualifications

I have a degree in organic chemistry from Liverpool University, and MSc and PhD degrees in information science from Sheffield University of Sheffield.

Employment

Before joining City, I worked in pharmaceutical research information services at Pfizer Central Research, Sandwich. More about my past life can be found here

Forthcoming

Programme chair and keynote speaker, LIDA, Zadar, June 2014
Keynote speaker at iFutures, Sheffield, July 2014
Keynote speaker at ECIL, Dubrovnik, October 2014
International advisor, COLIS9, Uppsala, June 2016

Research

My main research interests are: concepts and theories of information, particularly relations between the concepts of information in different domains; information history; aspects of information behaviour, particularly those involving browsing, creativity and innovation; individual differences in information behaviour and practices; digital literacy; information in specific subject domains. For more details please look here. ">here.

Most of my research is involves qualitative syntheses for gaining understanding: see my article On the gaining of understanding; syntheses, themes and information analysis .

A subset of my publications, exemplifying these areas, is here.

I also have a strong interest in the link between theory and practice in the information sciences, stemming from my experience as a practitioner for twelve years in research information services in the pharmaceutical industry.

Most of my work is individual scholarship, together with supervision of research students and masters dissertation students.

Education

Courses taught

I am leading, or contributing to, these courses on City’s Information Studies Scheme:

Library and Information Science Foundation (lecturer)
Information Resources and Organisation (module leader)
Information Domains (module leader)
Digital Libraries (lecturer)
Research, Evaluation and Communication Skills (module leader)
Independent Study (module leader)
Dissertation project (module leader)

Writings

I am co-author of what reviewers have kindly described as the best current textbook of information science:
D Bawden and L Robinson, Introduction to information science, Facet, 2012

I have also co-authored a paper about the development of the teaching of library and information science at City University London over 50 years:
L Robinson and D Bawden, Information (and library) science at City Universty London: fifty years of educational development, Journal of Information Science, 2010, 36(5), 618-630

CPD training

I have conducted CPD training for a number of organisations, particularly Aslib Training, with whom I have worked for over 25 years. I current lead Aslib workshops (face-to-face and distance) on organising digital information, metadata, thesaurus, indexing, and assessing value of information services.
