The Olive Tree Programme

Damian Gorman

Writer and Facilitator of the Olive Tree Programme

Damian Gorman has been a writer, and encourager of other people's writing, for more than 25 years. In that time he has worked with thousands of people in hundreds of groups.

Damian was founding director of An Crann/The Tree, a charity which worked to help "tell, and hear, the stories of Northern Ireland's Troubles" from 1994 to 2001. His work has gathered awards as diverse as a Better Ireland Award and an MBE. In 2007 he received a Major Individual Artist Award from the Arts Council.

He is currently preparing a new show with the Bosnian theatre director Haris Pasovic. The Conquest of Happiness will be a feature event of Derry's UK City of Culture Year (2013). It will premiere in the city in May 2013, before travelling to Belfast, Sarajevo, Mostar and Llubljana.

But among all the things he has worked on, and the different people he has worked with, Damian says he "treasures" the memories of his times with Olive Tree scholars over the years, "because of their courage, their passion, and willingness to learn something new".
