Visiting Professor, David Oliver, named National Clinical Director for Older People
David Oliver, a Visiting Professor in City’s School of Community and Health Sciences’ Older Persons Research and Development Team, has been appointed as the National Clinical Director for Older People by the Department of Health.
In his new role, Professor Oliver will promote better care of the elderly within the NHS and social care services, by providing clinical leadership for the cross-government ageing strategy, ‘Building a Society for all Ages’. He will lead on work to implement the Prevention Package for Older People which is designed to help keep them safe, independent, and prevent them from needing long-term care.
Professor Oliver will also help implement the new adaptations to the Equality Bill which have made it illegal to discriminate on grounds of age in healthcare.
“I am delighted to take up this role. Our ageing population is a success story, but, as many older people need to access health and social care, we have to continue to improve the whole system.”

Professor Oliver will stay on at City in his current role where he supervises postgraduate students, helps develop links with local NHS and is involved in research projects in the Department.
