Department of Music launches free lunchtime concert series

Free lunchtime concerts launched.

City’s Department of Music is pleased to announce a series of Friday lunchtime concerts in early 2010 where staff, students and local residents can enjoy performances by outstanding young pianists from the jointly run City and Guildhall School of Music & Drama’s Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) programme.

The concerts will be held in the Department’s purpose built performance space to mark the arrival of a new Steinway B piano, donated to the School of Arts by The Annual Fund. The Fund is run by City’s Development Office and is supported by hundreds of alumni, staff and friends of the University, with the aim of enhancing City’s learning environment.

Katharine Norman, Head of Music at City, says: “We are thrilled to be able to have the facilities to offer professional performance opportunities for the young career performers on the joint DMA programme, and in turn offer a varied programme of classical music to the University and the local community.

“We are grateful to the Alumni for their assistance in making this possible, and to Acting Vice-Chancellor, Julius Weinberg, for his support on this venture."

The concert series will open on 12 February, with Indre Petrauskaite, this year's joint winner of the City University London Cordwainers Prize for Music, as the first performer and City’s new DMA Programme Director, renowned contemporary pianist Ian Pace, closing the series.
