City Law School Pro Bono activity in South Africa

The City Law School is running an exciting internship giving two students the chance to work with a Legal Aid Clinic in South Africa for four weeks.

Students from The City Law School are being encouraged to participate in a stimulating Pro Bono internship in South Africa. The scheme was made possible through a blossoming partnership with the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Cape Town, and enables candidates to spend four weeks at the University’s Legal Aid Advice Clinic.

The programme highlights City’s excellent international links and the diverse opportunities available to students. The successful candidates attend the clinic and get involved with many aspects from sitting in on client conferences and attending court with the lawyers, to drafting statements and assisting with legal education programmes in the local community.

The Pro Bono scheme helps make students more marketable to their future employers, whilst giving them a chance to give something back to the community. Last year, BVC student Kayode Smith participated and was extremely impressed by the professionalism and dedication of the lawyers at the clinic. He was also pleased with the opportunity the scheme gave him to experience another legal comparative jurisdiction.

"The internship programme is a unique opportunity for City University London to enhance its international links and provide our law students with a chance to see how law is practiced in an African country for people in need."

Sarwan Singh, Pro Bono Director at The City Law School

The City Law School hopes to increase the internship recruitment, giving more students the chance to travel to Cape Town, as well as trying to develop a sabbatical programme for city staff involved in Pro Bono in South Africa.
