George Brock appointed as new Head of Journalism.
City University London has appointed current International Editor of The Times, George Brock, as the new Head of its award-winning Department of Journalism.
Brock, who will join City University London on 1 September 2009, started his career at the Yorkshire Evening Press as a graduate trainee and reporter, before becoming home affairs reporter for The Observer in 1976. In 1981 Brock moved to The Times where he has worked ever since in various roles, including Opinion Editor, Foreign Editor, Managing Editor and Saturday Editor.
At The Times, Brock has been closely involved in the development of The Times's website and was the first editor of The Times ‘compact’ version in 2003. From 2004 – 2008, Brock was President of the World Editors Forum, which runs the world's largest conference for print and digital editors.
Brock says: “With the changes and challenges of digital publishing, this is an important moment for the training of the next generation of journalists. It's a great honour to lead best journalism school in the country.
“City’s Department of Journalism, which incorporates the UK’s first Graduate School of Journalism, is committed to educating first-rate professionals for the global media industry.”
President and Vice-Chancellor of City University London, Professor Malcolm Gillies, commented: “City’s Department of Journalism is one of Europe’s finest professional training schools, with huge respect in the profession.
“George Brock comes to the University with three decades of work as a practical reporter, editor and manager. We look forward to seeing him inject a heightened spirit of internationalism into the Journalism School.”
Under the leadership of Adrian Monck, who leaves to take up a post as Head of Communications at the World Economic Forum, the Department of Journalism has pioneered vibrant new programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It recently moved to new £12 million premises at Northampton Square which feature state-of-the-art television and radio studios.
