City student voted top European blogger

Graduate School of Journalism student wins the ‘TH!NK About It’ European blogging competition 2009.

Graduate School of Journalism student, Etan Smallman, beat 80 bloggers from around Europe to take the top prize in the ‘TH!NK About It’ European blogging competition 2009.

Etan, who studies the Postgraduate Diploma in Newspaper Journalism, won the award after the public and the blog’s editors rated his posts as the best on the ‘TH!NK About It’ website. His blog gave running commentary on political campaigning in the UK ahead of the European MEP elections – something which was more eventful than usual this year, thanks to the MP’s expenses scandal.

"It was a wonderful surprise to win the European blogging competition in Rotterdam - and particularly gratifying that the British bloggers as a group did so well considering that the UK is usually thought to be apathetic and ignorant about European politics. The chance to take part in this groundbreaking project was just one of the many fantastic opportunities that I have received thanks to being a student at the Graduate School of Journalism and allowed me to put the skills that I have learnt here into practice in front of an international audience."

All of the ‘TH!INK About It’ bloggers had to submit one post a month to the site which commented on European politics between February to June ahead of the European MEP elections.  A total of 30 bloggers received awards in a variety of categories, with City students Katrina Bishop and David Christopher - from the Postgraduate Diploma in Newspaper Journalism and MA in Newspaper Journalism respectively - winning ‘Quality Blogger’ awards.

“It is fantastic that the UK winners of the competition were all from City’s Graduate School of Journalism. Blogging has become an important element of journalism, and Etan, David and Kat are a real credit to the School. They show how we are producing quality journalists who can really deliver top-notch stories and thoughtful, engaging content online.”
Jonathan Hewett, Director of Newspaper Journalism at City
