Dr. Alexander Lingas awarded the Thank-Offering to Britain Fellowship by The British Academy.
Dr. Alexander Lingas, Department of Music, has been awarded the Thank-Offering to Britain Fellowship by The British Academy, for his research proposal including revising and updating work previously done by Egon Wellesz on Byzantine Music.
The Fellowship, equivalent to Senior Research Fellow, will run from Autumn. There were only seven Senior Research Fellowships and one Thank-Offering to Britain Fellowship available, for which 113 applications were submitted, more than in any recent year.
Lingas is writing a new introduction to Byzantine chant from its origins to the present for the Yale University Press, considering not only musical style but also with cultural context and identity.
Professor Denis Smalley says: “Congratulations to Alexander for this achievement, especially as feedback from The Academy highlighted the high standard of the competition.”
The purpose of these awards, funded by the Leverhulme Trust and the Thank-Offering to Britain Fund, and administered by the British Academy, is to provide a period of research leave for one year for established scholars during which they will be able to concentrate on bringing a major piece of research towards completion.
The British Academy is the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences. As a Fellowship composed of nearly 900 distinguished scholars, it takes a lead in representing the humanities and social sciences, facilitating international collaboration, providing an independent and authoritative source of advice, and contributing to public policy and debate. The Leverhulme Trust makes awards for the support of research and education.
