Museum education in the UK and Japan

Meeting between Head of Cultural Policy and Management and senior Japanese colleagues

On February 7th 2008, Vicky Woollard, Acting Head of the Department of Cultural Policy and Management, met with senior Japanese colleagues to discuss cultural sector curriculum issues in Japan and the UK.

Fumio Ozawa, Head of the Social Education Division from the Japanese Ministry of Education Culture and Sports, Science and Technology, and his colleague Professor Eiji Mizushima from the Museum Management Studies Department of Tokiwa University, visited City University London's Department of Cultural Policy and Management to discuss curriculum issues relating to postgraduate education for intending and practising curators and other museum staff.

In 2007, the Department of Cultural Policy and Management carried out a consultation exercise with past students and UK and overseas cultural industry employers to develop the new MA Culture, Policy and Management. This 2007 consultation  enabled Vicky to discuss City’s emphasis on generic management skills such as financial and business planning and marketing.  The Department  has 3 - 4 Japanese students attending the programme annually.
