Dr Michel Odent to speak at City
World-leading obstetrician will discuss his views on childbirth
World-leading obstetrician and childbirth specialist Dr Michel Odent is speaking at City University London in March about his views on childbirth.
Hosted by the City University London Students’ Union Midwifery Society and taking place on the 16 March, Dr Odent will discuss his research and experience in the field and there will also be a Q&A session and a chance to purchase his books.
A leading figurehead in the area of obstetrics and midwifery, Dr Odent is a French obstetrician and childbirth specialist devoted to the understanding of how environmental factors influence childbirth.
In the 1970s he introduced the concepts of home-like birthing rooms and birthing pools in maternity hospitals and is the founder of the Primal Health Research Centre. He is the author of the first article in the medical literature about the use of birthing pools (Lancet 1983), of the first article about the initiation of lactation during the hour following birth, and of the first article applying the 'Gate Control Theory of Pain' to obstetrics.
Speaking about the event, Becky Vogwell, President of CULSU Midwifery Society said:
“The talk itself is an opportunity for students and staff to meet a prominent figure within maternity and obstetrics and to ask any burning questions they may have. Michel is very different to the majority of obstetricians as he believes entirely in human physiology and in letting nature take its course; it is a refreshing perspective from a midwives’ point of view to hear this coming from a doctor.”
The event is taking place Wednesday 16th March at 14:30 to 16:30 in room C309. Tickets are free for midwifery society members & £5 for non-members. Purchase tickets here.
