Magazine Journalism students and alumni win top journalism awards

The Professional Publishers Association has given prizes to City journalism students and alumni for the eighth year in a row

Students and alumni from the MA Magazine Journalism course have been recognised at the 2015 Professional Publishers Association (PPA) New Talent Awards. Hannah Ewens won the Most Promising Postgraduate Student of the Year and Kathryn Bromwich was highly commended in this category. It is the eighth year in a row that MA Magazine Journalism students at City University London have won this prestigious national award. Alumna Sophie Wilkinson was highly commended in the New Consumer Journalist of the Year category and Caroline Millington, also an alumna, was highly commended in the Gamechanger of the Year category.

It was an exceptionally talented year and the two winners were real stars. Both have great futures in the industry.

MA Magazine Journalism Programme Director, Barbara Rowlands said: "We are absolutely thrilled for City students to have won this prestigious award again – it’s always a highly contested category and a nail-biting moment when they read out the winners. It was an exceptionally talented year and the two winners were real stars. Both have great futures in the industry.”

Winning student Hannah Ewen works as a freelance journalist and has written for Vice, Noisey, Kerrang! and The Debrief. She said: “I'm really excited about winning. I have been holding out for the perfect job and along the way have really enjoyed freelancing for different titles. I’ve been able to do some incredible things like cover music festivals and talk to some of my heroes.”

Hannah said of winning the award: “I think I was picked for my writing. Where I've been working for myself I've been able to focus on doing pieces I'm excited about and really getting my name out in lots of ways. I've had a lot of freedom to develop my style and learn what I love to do. All the publications I’ve written for have been amazing at nurturing and championing me, which I'm so grateful for.”

The PPA New Talent Awards were held at the Brewery in London and hosted by editor of Stylist Lisa Smosarksi. In 2012, Smosarksi was named PPA Editor of the Year.
