CitySport kicks off with performance from champion freestyle footballer

City University London celebrates the opening of its brand new sports facility with freestyle footballer Tom Folan.

by Nicola Ranson (Communications Officer)

CitySport, the University's brand new sports and fitness centre has opened its doors for the first time with a performance from champion football freestyler Tom Folan. Located on Goswell Road, the centre is one of the biggest student experience and community initiatives the University has invested in during recent years.

With cutting edge equipment, a packed timetable of fitness and wellbeing classes and an Olympic standard sports hall, the centre offers facilities to suit everyone from students and staff to members of the local community.

To celebrate the opening of the state-of-the-art centre, Tom Folan performed outside the Students' Union on Monday. Tom is one of the best freestylers in the UK, having performed for UEFA, won a competition by PlayStation and competed for the UK in the World Championships in 2013.

Head of Sports and Leisure, Bill Thompson said: "We are really excited that this fantastic facility is now open and we'd like to welcome students, staff and the public to come along to see what CitySport has to offer. The centre is fitted out with the latest technology and equipment, offering a first class setting for individuals and teams to meet their sport and fitness goals. Through CitySport we hope to provide a facility that the university and local community can be proud of."

Bill added: "Everyone can benefit from exercise. It doesn't have to be a vigorous workout or participation in a team sport; you can find simple ways to include physical activity in your daily routine. Research carried out this year shows that students who participate in sport at university improve their employability as graduates as well as developing healthy bodies. Becoming involved with sport equips you with key skills for your future."

Tours of CitySport are available every half an hour with no obligation and there are a variety of membership options. Visit citysport.org.uk for more information.
