The Environment Agency ranks City as the greenest university in the UK

City University London is recognised for its significant increases in energy efficiency
by

nullThe Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme has named City University London as the most energy efficient university in the UK. The latest performance league table published by the Environment Agency ranked City in 64th place overall out of more than 2000 organisations.

The league table is based on how well organisations manage their energy use under the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. This mandatory initiative requires private and public sector organisations that use more than 6,000MWh of electricity a year to measure and report their carbon emissions.

City has moved up the league table by more than 90 places since the last publication in 2012. The result reflects an on-going commitment to reducing the impact of University operations on the environment.

Jason Clarke is the Energy and Environment Manager at City University London:

"The improvement is due to high levels of awareness about the sustainability agenda amongst staff and students as well as City's swift action when presented with carbon reduction recommendations. As we deliver the University's Estates Strategy, we will continue to implement innovative emissions reduction projects such as our new Combined Cooling, Heating and Power (CCHP) infrastructure. The importance we place on our Carbon Management Plan will enable us to continue making good progress in this area."

Participation in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is a statutory requirement for all UK institutions over a certain size that are not covered by any other carbon scheme, such as the European Emissions trading Scheme (EUETS). The performance league table ranks organisations based on their carbon emissions and management metrics and covers 2011/12 emissions.
