Informatics students attend BlackBerry Developers’ Conference

Students and staff from City's School of Informatics attended the European BlackBerry Developers' Conference in Amsterdam recently.

The field trip was organised to give students an insight into the career opportunities available to them as software developers and to enable them to gain new technical skills in the fast-growing field of mobile application development. All of the attendees received a free BlackBerry PlayBook tablet computer and were able to participate in hands-on lab and 'ask the expert' sessions.

Olga Herrero, a Teaching Assistant at City who attended the event, said: "We are focussed on giving our students the expertise they need to succeed in the workplace. Conferences such as this provide a great opportunity for them to find out what is happening in the industry right now, to meet IT professionals and potential employers, and to think about where they want their careers to take them."

Reactions from students to the BlackBerry DevCon were extremely positive. One commented that it was "a very enjoyable yet thought-provoking experience - I got to meet new colleagues and network with business leaders." Others added "a good place to get some inspiration" and "I'm seriously considering becoming a developer!"
