A warm welcome to City University London

Message from our Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Curran:

Welcome to City University London. Congratulations on obtaining the grades you needed and I trust you had a relaxing and rewarding summer.

City is a special place. We are committed to academic excellence, focused on business and the professions and offer everything you would expect from a prestigious University in a world city.

City is ranked 4th out of the London Universities and is the UK's 9th University for graduate-level jobs according to the The Sunday Times. Moreover, City is ranked 21st in the UK by the Guardian University Guide 2013 and is in the top 5% of world universities according to Times Higher Education. We have a rich heritage with close links to the City of London and a Vision to be in the top 2% of universities in the world by 2016.

Fifteen of our academic subject areas produce research that ranks with the best in the world according to the last Research Assessment Exercise 2008 and the people in these subject areas will be educating you. This is an important point because you will be learning with academics who are themselves learning as they develop their subjects.

You will learn most effectively when you take responsibility for your learning and you will find you will learn as much informally from your colleagues and students on other programmes as you will in lectures, laboratories and the library. Your subject is important but remember that there is more to university than academic study. Take advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities on offer through the Students' Union, its clubs and societies and in London generally. From volunteering and community liaison to sport, music and drama, the possibilities are boundless.

I'm very pleased that you have joined us and I am sure you will enjoy the City University London experience.

Professor Paul Curran
Vice-Chancellor
