Professor Malcolm Gillies

Malcolm Gillies studied piano and violin at the Royal College of Music, undergraduate Music at Cambridge University and graduate Music Theory and Analysis at King’s College London. He holds a PhD from the University of London and a higher Doctorate of Music from the University of Melbourne.

 

He has published a dozen books on musical topics and over one hundred articles and chapters. Since 1997 he has been editor of the Oxford University Press series, Studies in Musical Genesis and Structure. In 2007, with David Pear and Mark Carroll, he gained an award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for the edited volume Self-Portrait of Percy Grainger (OUP, 2006).

 

Malcolm Gillies was Vice-Chancellor and President of City University London from August 2007 to July 2009. He continues to engage in musical research and to supervise a small number of graduate students.

The life and music of Béla Bartók, the life and music of Percy Grainger,  Hungarian music history, music analysis, aural training, music assessment
