Student launches free, volunteer-run technical support service
A City undergraduate is helping fellow students gain work experience, while providing IT advice and support to individuals and organisations.
Luther Knight, an undergraduate at City University London, has launched Digitally Maintained - a technical support service run by student volunteers. It aims to give both individuals and organisations free advice on IT issues, while enabling students to gain valuable experience of troubleshooting and customer liaison during their degrees.
While studying for a BSc in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence at City, Luther has already recruited a network of computing students from universities around the UK and produced a series of tutorials addressing some of the most common IT problems.
Luther says: "One of the things that makes graduates stand out when they start looking for employment is work experience, however it can be difficult to fit this in around your studies. With Digitally Maintained, I hope to enable fellow students to expand their CVs in a flexible way, while helping all of those people who need technical support, but either can't afford it or don't know where to look."
Jessica Flack, a Work-based Learning Advisor and Personal Development Planning Tutor at City, adds: "Digitally Maintained is testament to Luther's impressive entrepreneurial skills and commitment to giving back to the community. He is a great ambassador for City and we wish him all the best."
The next step for Digitally Maintained is to expand its service, by offering tailored support to consumers, businesses, charities and public sector organisations without charge. Luther is also keen to recruit marketing and business studies students, as well as computing ones, to support growth.
