City University London builds stronger links with US institutions
City is to collaborate with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Northeastern University in Boston and Santa Monica College as part of the Prime Minister's Initiative Connect UK-US Partnership Scheme.
City University London has created a new partnership with three US higher education institutions as part of a UK Government initiative to encourage stronger links between the two countries.
The Prime Minister's Initiative (PMI2) Connect UK-US Partnership Scheme has provided pump-prime funding for City to collaborate with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Northeastern University in Boston and Santa Monica College. It is one of only 22 out of 230 submissions to be supported.
The partnership kicked off in July with academics from all three US institutions visiting City's campus in central London, to explore and develop joint research and teaching, as well as student exchange opportunities across arts, engineering and social sciences.
The Project Leader, City's Professor Sanowar Khan, commented: "US and UK education institutions have traditionally had a close relationship and continue to rank highly in global league tables. However, with Asia growing in influence, we mustn't rest on our laurels, but reinforce our transatlantic bonds.
"Our three new partners represent the breadth of the US geographic and educational landscape: a private, research intensive institution on the east coast; a world-renowned public educational establishment in the Midwest; and a Californian community college focussed on learning at all ages. As such, we look forward to engaging in an array of new and exciting ventures."
The project is the latest in a series of initiatives that City is undertaking to build relationships around the world. In September 2010, it hosted the inaugural conference of the World Cities World Class (WC2) University Network. This aims to build closer links between universities, local governments and business communities in major economic and cultural hubs, with other founding members coming from Berlin, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Seoul and St Petersburg.
