Library Membership

Find out how to get started using library services

Library membership is automatically granted to students and staff of the University and to those teaching or studying on validated courses.  Services available for you to use will vary depending on your membership category.

The library registration procedure for all City University students and staff, external members and staff working for our affiliated NHS Trusts is outlined below.

City University London students

For students, library registration is integrated into the registration process for your course.  Once this has been completed - and you have obtained your University ID card -  you will be ready to start using our services and accessing electronic resources straight away.

City University London staff

University staff can complete our simple online staff registration form - you will need your staff ID card at hand to do this.  Alternatively, visit your local site library with your staff ID card and register in person.

Centre for Adult Education students

Students attending courses run by the Centre for Adult Education will be issued with a University pass for the duration of their course.  Please bring this to the library, along with your letter and receipt confirming attendance on a current course.

NHS staff

NHS staff members from Barts and the London NHS Trust are eligible to use and borrow items from the School of Community and Health Sciences Libraries (West Smithfield and Whitechapel).

A pilot scheme allows SCHS library membership to all staff at the following NHS trusts until 31st May 2011.

  • East London and the City Mental Health Trust
  • Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust
  • Newham Primary Care Trust
  • City and Hackney Primary Care Trust

Trust staff members working at any of these Trusts need to visit one of the SCHS Libraries, bringing their NHS staff badge.  You will be asked to complete a form.

Validated course students and staff

City University validates selected courses from a number of institutions. Library privileges are only available to students on these specific courses. Students on these courses will have been issued with a regular City University ID card and will need to bring this card on each visit.

Academic staff involved in teaching on a City University validated course will need to register separately with Library Services. Library access and membership will be arranged through the Academic Development Unit.

External members

City University alumni, SCONUL Access users and other external readers should follow the links at the top/left of the page to find the relevant access and registration details.
