Request an Inter-Library Loan

PLEASE NOTE - There is a delay in the provision of some titles. This is due to some of the British Library's collections being closed for the next few months while they remove asbestos. Library staff will advise you if this applies to your request. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Overview of Inter-Library Loans

The library aims to stock all books and journal articles listed on your course reading list.

  • Material you may need for project, dissertation or research work may not be available in the Library.
  • The inter-library loan service allows users to request books and articles from journals that are not held in any library collection at City University.
  • All books requested are obtained from the British Library for a specified loan period (usually 3 to 6 weeks).
  • Users can keep the photocopies of the journal articles they have requested.
  • We try to obtain requested items as quickly as possible. However we cannot guarantee to supply a particular item by a specified deadline.
  • Some types of material are difficult to obtain. For example CDs, DVDs and videos are not easy to borrow. Some conference proceedings prove tricky. Some journals are only available electronically and license agreements prohibit inter-library sharing.
  • In exceptional circumstances when we are unable to track down your inter-library loan request we are unable to offer refunds.

Check our resources first!

  • We charge for our inter-library loan service.
  • It is in your own interest to ensure items are not held at any City University library before placing your request.
  • First of all, check the library catalogue at http://library.city.ac.uk.

Secure Electronic Delivery

We can now supply journal articles, conference papers and book chapters electronically via the British Library’s Secure Electronic Delivery (SED) service.

Articles will be sent to you as Adobe pdf  files in an email containing a web link to the document. Clicking on the link will download and open the document.

In order to access these documents you must have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer. To download Adobe Digital Editions free of charge please visit http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/.

Before using this service you must try the Test Document that the British Library provide at http://www.bl.uk/sed to make sure SED works on your PC. This website also provides more information on the service. Do not place orders directly with the British Library yourself as it will cost much more!

Please note: When you receive your SED document you can only open the document once and it disappears after 14 days. It cannot be saved on your pc so it is important to print it out as soon as possible.

If the item is not available from the British Library we will attempt to obtain a normal paper copy from another library.

Please contact Inter-Library loans 020 7040 4019, interloans@city.ac.uk  for further details.
