Streaming Knowledge Method (SKM)

SKM is a method that helps simplify ideas and communicate them in a concise way. Using a template table and drawing on intuitive knowledge, participants organise ideas into descriptive key-words, which are then expanded into coherent sentences.

The method can also be used by students to organise ideas before visiting the library or conducting literature review.

Students and staff often find it challenging to organise ideas when they need to conduct literature search, write essays, or just deliver a presentation.


The Streaming Knowledge Method uses a simple table, as well as participants’ intuitive knowledge, to help break ideas into relevant key-words, which are then re-defined and expanded to coherent argument.
The method is unique in facilitating what participants already know – their intuitive a-priori knowledge. In doing so, participants create content that is clear, relevant and meaningful to them; and in that it becomes easier for them to communicate it to others.


I have developed the method based on research conducted in Israel and at Sheffield University, and have used it to structure my own PhD. I am teaching this method to students at The Open University.
In this workshop we will have a ‘taste’ of the method, and use it to simplify a topic into key-words. We will then develop the key-words to a short paragraph of text and also a collage (no artistic skills required). The collage will act as a ‘visual’ reference point to reflect on the text.

Outcomes:

  • Learn how to clarify and re-define ideas (concepts, theories)
  • Learn how to look at ideas from different perspectives, and condense them to key-words
  • Experience ‘translating’ key-words to a coherent paragraph of text, and to a simple collage that will act as a visual reference point to examine your key-words.
