Pro Bono
Now in its tenth year, our Pro Bono Programme was originally founded with the introduction of our highly successful in-house Advice Clinic. The clinic was created to give students the opportunity to work with real-life clients.
The clinic has 100 students who interview and provide written advice to more than 50 genuine clients. The project is incredibly popular, with many clients making repeated use of the excellent service they receive - a testament to our dedicated staff and high-calibre students.
Over the past decade, our Pro Bono Programme has grown to include an ever increasing number of partnership programmes at local, national and international level. We encourage students to play an active role in the daily running of these projects and in the development of both new and existing projects. We were one of the first law schools in London to set up an Innocence Project where students can learn about miscarriages
of justice and investigate real cases of convicted prisoners who believe they are innocent.
We are also linked with the National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV)- McKenzie Friends, which provides free assistance to victims of domestic violence who are seeking
urgent injunctions, but do not have the benefit of legal aid to obtain advice or representation from a solicitor. Participating students work alongside police officers and specialist family law professionals to learn about injunctions and preparing a case file.
We are partnered with the Free Representation Unit (FRU) to give students the option to represent real clients before tribunals in England Wales.
Our other partnerships include:
- Amnesty International Letter Writing Clinic
- Blackfriars Settlement Clinic
- Environmental Law Foundation
- Islington People Rights and the Golden Lane Legal Advice Clinic
- Liberty Letter Writing Clinic
- Street Law
