Robert joined The City Law School (formerly the Inns of Court School of Law) in 1983. He teaches advocacy, EU competition law, evidence and also criminal litigation and sentencing. He practised as a barrister for 5 years at 5 Pump Court, Middle Temple with a common law practice, especially criminal law. He has contributed to several City Law School manuals including those in advocacy skills, criminal litigation and sentencing, evidence and remedies. He is the sole author of The City Law School manual on European competition law.
He has been a team leader in trial advocacy at Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto, and is thoroughly familiar with using the NITA method of advocacy training. He is accredited as advocacy trainer by the IATC. He has been an external examiner for the Professional Legal Studies Course at the Queen's University, Belfast and in 1999 he was appointed as an external examiner for the BVC at the University of Northumbria.
In 1998, Robert was appointed advocacy co-ordinator for the new LLM in Criminal Litigation, having played a substantial part in its design, and in September 2000 he became the Course Leader for this degree. He regularly teaches on the LLM course.
Robert has designed and delivered many CPD courses. For example, he has run courses on advocacy for solicitors. He designed and ran a short course for expert witnesses (engineers) in giving effective evidence in court. He has worked on the Higher Rights for Solicitors course and the Professional Skills Course. He has been involved in designing and delivering advocacy training for presenting officers in the Immigration and Nationality Directorate at the Home Office.
