Julie began her writing career at the University of British Columbia where she edited the student newspaper, then worked for The Vancouver Sun and later became president of a national newspaper organisation, Canadian University Press.
Since moving to London in 1984 where she received an MA in History from Sussex University, she has written for several national newspaper and magazines and is a regular contributor to the literary pages of The Independent. Her articles have appeared in The BBC History Magazine, The Guardian, The Observer, The Telegraph, Red Magazine and Scotland on Sunday, among others.
An award-winning writer, Julie Wheelwright’s books include 'The Fatal Love: Mata Hari and the Myth of Women in Espionage' which was translated into five languages and 'Amazons and Military Maids: Women Who Dressed as Men in Pursuit of Life, Liberty and Happiness'. Julie has also produced documentaries for the History Channel, the BBC and Channel Four. She has written and presented documentaries for BBC Radio Four and has made many appearances on Woman’s Hour, Great Lives and Start the Week.
Her next book, A Stolen Child: The Story of Esther Wheelwright, will be published by HarperCollins Canada next year.
