David Lloyd joined Channel 4 in 1986, when it was still a very young TV channel. He stayed to lead its News and Current Affairs team for the next 17 years, (first as Senior Commissioning Editor and then in the newly created post of Head of News, Current Affairs and Business) and was widely acknowledged as one of the most influential figures in British News and Current Affairs. In 2003, his outstanding contribution to broadcasting was recognized when he received The Judges Award at the Royal Television Society's Journalism Awards. 
 
Tin Gardam, Channel 4 Director of Television (1998 - 2004) said: "David is one of the great figures of news and current affairs who has led and influenced a generation.  He is the founder of Channel 4 journalism. His creative and intellectual judgment is second to none."
 
During Lloyd's tenure, Channel 4 News and Current Affairs built its reputation for producing challenging and authoritative programmes.  He was responsible for creating the channel's flagship current affairs series Dispatches and the critically acclaimed international current affairs series, Unreported World. He steered Channel 4 News to its current position as the most intelligent and analytical news programme on British television today and winner of two International Emmys. He oversaw coverage of four General Elections and commissioned numerous provocative and revelatory political programmes and series including Portillo's Progress, The Thatcher Factor and A Week In Politics. He was also responsible for many award-winning films including Staying Lost and Sorious Samora's Out of Africa.
 
Lloyd joined Channel 4 from the BBC where he had already enjoyed a distinguished career in current affairs. He began there as a general trainee in 1967 and over the following 18-years he was editor of Newsnight, Breakfast Time and The Money Programme.
