Rationale

To enable students to use video cameras and computerised video editing to create a variety of current affairs films of different lengths and tone for television.

Module aims

You will be able to:

  • acquire and apply the technical skills and editorial judgement necessary to create a high standard and variety of television film
  • demonstrate the ability to select, prioritise, balance, pace and communicate information
  • understand how to deal effectively and courteously with the public, experts, and officials on their own ground
  • react appropriately to locations and situations
  • work legally and honourably

Indicative content

The study of differing television current affairs film styles and techniques, the creation of a variety of television films, instruction in writing treatments and scripts, the researching and practical casting of interviewees, the computerised editing of TV films, practise in dealing with the public, and the demonstration of camera work, sound recording and visual conventions.

Assessment and credit

10 credits

The module is an elective for students on the Diploma/MA in Journalism (pathways in Broadcast Journalism and Television Current Affairs Journalism only).

The module is assessed by coursework only.
