There are many things that you need to think about before you travel to the UK to start your studies.

This section gives you detailed information about how you can prepare for your time in the UK before you leave your home country, including how to make your student visa application, information about English language support and details of things you should bring with you when you travel to the UK.

Preparing to study in the UK

Prepare for Success is an interactive web learning tool for students who are getting ready to come to the UK for studies. It contains activity-based resources to help you find out about different aspects of academic life in the UK and the skills needed for effective study.

This programme is intended primarily for international students whose first language is not English. It is aimed at students with an IELTS level between 5.0 and 7.5 or equivalent.

Preparing to live in the UK

The British Council produce a range of publications giving guidance to international students on coming to the UK. First steps - a pre-departure guide for international students coming to the UK covers what students need to know and do before they leave home, along with advice about arriving in the UK, settling in and getting on with making the most of being a student in the UK.

The British Council also organise pre-departure briefings for students.
