Department of Information Science
In the 2001 Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Research Assessment Exercise, the department was awarded a grade 5 research rating indicating research of "international excellence". This maintains our track record of research excellence having achieved research ratings in the highest categories in all four Research Assessment Exercises held since 1989. Our research activity is organised around three highly active research groups.
The City giCentre is made up of global research leaders in the field of GeoInformatics and Geographical Information Science. The centre is dedicated to the development of novel ways of understanding the world through digital geographical information to achieve new insights about society and the environment, and to enable access to information in ways that are beneficial and effective.
CISR is actively involved in a number of important areas such as the use of social media in image and multimedia retrieval with various industrial and academic partners. We have continued to work on the themes we've developed over the past decades, such as the probabilistic modelling of Information Retrieval, context-learning search algorithms and mobile information systems, as well as new areas such as disabilities and search.
Established within the Department of Information Science at City University London, CIS is the focus for teaching, research and scholarship in the core areas of information science.
