Department of Information Science
The Department of Information Science at City is leading in research and postgraduate education in library/information science, information retrieval, and information visualization. It draws on a tradition of innovation that spans over 40 years of leadership in the profession and an acclaimed excellence in research and scholarship.
Research in the Department has been rated excellent in all Higher Education Funding Council's research assessment exercises, maintaining its position amongst the top ranking IS departments in the UK.
Information Science ideas and methods, from once being the concern of a small professional group, have in recent years permeated many subjects and activities at different levels. This process has been driven in part by the widespread availability of information technology. However, the main stimulus has come from the increasing complexity and corporate awareness of problems of communication, information handling and information management, in a variety of disciplines.
The Department delivers six research-led postgraduate taught courses, as well as research studies, leading to a PhD degree.

All courses are accredited by either the Chartered Institute of Library or Information Professionals (CILIP), or the British Computer Society (BCS). The Department also jointly delivers courses with Sociology (Information, Communication and Society, administered by the School of Social Sciences) and Journalism (Electronic Publishing).
