Student Support

Your career

We are dedicated to supporting you in achieving your career goals. Whatever field you want to work in and whatever stage you are at, we have the support and the links to meet your needs at every step of your career.

City's dedicated Career and Skills Development Centre provides you with specialist careers guidance to advance your career. The careers advisers at the Centre give students individual guidance and support for interviews, mock interviews and job searching techniques.

Throughout your course our expert staff and your personal tutor are also on hand to give specialist advice on both your study and your future. With invaluable practice experience and a keen knowledge of the requirements of modern healthcare they will guide you through your course and support you as you go on placements and finally into the field of your choice.

Clinical placements and Communities of Practice

nullClinical placements are a vital factor in promoting understanding and development of professional skills. They help you become fit for practice, fit for purpose and fit for award by the time you complete your programme. Each placement provides you with educational opportunities to develop your professional skills.

Placements are undertaken within Communities of Practice. A Community of Practice is a group of healthcare practitioners, who share specific professional interests such as midwifery, mental health nursing, children's nursing, primary care and public health care or adult nursing.

Learning environment

Our interactive lecture theatres and teaching rooms provide a perfect learning environment. Fully equipped with a PC network and projection facilities, our teaching accommodation will help you to get the most out of your time in class.

Student Centre

The Student Centre can offer information and help on a whole range of matters including: financial support, housing, international student support, disability services, dyslexia support, payment of fees, academic learning support and student mental health and wellbeing support.

Library services

There is a specialist health library at West Smithfield, open Monday to Friday 08:30-19:00 throughout the year. There is also a collection of health resources available at the main library in Northampton Square.

IT services

nullOur IT team helps students to access IT and audio-visual facilities, expertise and support across the University, including the cross-campus wireless network. When you start your course you will be given your own email address, webspace and backed-up file storage space. You will also have access to:

The following audio visual facilities are also available for student loan at no cost:

Resources include textbooks, journals, e-books, DVDs, electronic journals and databases. Items such as databases, e-journals and e-books can be accessed from anywhere so you don't have to come in to study and can use many resources from home or while on placement.

The libraries offer different study spaces to reflect the different study needs of students. Some courses or parts of modules require a more collaborative approach while some require more individual, silent study.

Our team of subject specific Librarians provide support and training for your studies and are available for group or one to one sessions.

Faith services

Our Chaplaincy Service is open to people of all faith, and to those who simply wish to know more. We have quiet rooms for prayer and a separate room for Muslims.

Students' Union

The Students' Union offers over 50 clubs and societies that you can join. Societies include a range of areas such as academic, cultural, religious, political or national interests, and clubs cover a wide range of sports from martial arts to basketball. Students can also create their own new clubs.

Sport and fitness

We are in the process of redeveloping the Sports Centre to include an Olympic quality six-court sports hall, a 100 station fitness area, spacious changing facilities, four multi-purpose studios, separate team changing areas and a cafe. Whilst the sports centre is closed for redevelopment, we have secured preferential rates with local Islington and national providers of fitness facilities for our students. Students can take advantage of exclusive preferential rates at Aquaterra Leisure, Fitness First plc, and Virgin Active Health Clubs.
