Mary T. Lee

Qualifications

Biography

Mary is a Speech and Language therapist who was trained in Canada at the University of British Columbia. She has a background in Psychology and Linguistics. Her area of clinical interest and expertise is Ears Nose and Throat (ENT), with a subspecialty in Head & Neck cancer. Mary has worked in this area in Canada, Australia and Italy, before joining City University. 

Mary is currently the Director of Professional Education within the department and maintains an overview for planning and management of the tutorial programme, intervention and placement programme for both the undergraduate and post graduate pre-registration programmes. She is also the Module Leader for Speech Language and Communication Disabilities and is supervises student research projects at the BSc Honours and MSc levels.  

Research interests

Mary is particularly interested in the functional outcomes in speech and swallowing after treatment for head & neck cancer, quality of life after total laryngectomy and in identifying the changes in swallow function after total laryngectomy. Currently, she is involved in research investigating how changes in swallowing function affect quality of life and adjustment following treatment for head & neck cancer, as well as the impact of early therapeutic intervention on subsequent long term swallowing recovery.

Teaching Interests

Teaching interests include developing case-based learning modules for student learning focussing on applying theory to practice, particularly in the area of voice, laryngectomy and dysphagia in head & neck cancer patients. She is interested in applying this approach to developing specialists both in the UK and Europe.   

External activities

Mary is currently involved in continuing professional development in Slovakia, Germany and Austria. She sits on the seniors' council for the E-LLP (English life-long learning programme) which promotes dysphagia research within clinical practice in the European Community. As well, Mary is involved with clinical research collaboration in Strasbourg France, in the use of cine-MRI for dysphagia diagnosis. She is  an active member of the Head & Neck Special Interest Group for London and the Southeast.
