Jo Verhoeven

Biography

Jo Verhoeven studied Dutch and General Linguistics at the University of Antwerp, from which he graduated in 1981. From there, he went on to study Neurolinguistics at the University of Brussels and Phonetics at the University of Edinburgh, from which he obtained an MSc in Phonetics in 1986. In 1992, he completed his PhD on the Perceptual Aspects of Dutch Intonation under supervision of Bob Ladd. Since then, Jo has taught phonetics at the Universities of Edinburgh, Oxford, Aarhus (Denmark), Hasselt (Belgium) and Antwerp (Belgium). He joined City University in 2006 as a lecturer in Acoustic Phonetics.

Jo Verhoeven's research interests are tone and intonation, regional variation in the phonetic characteristics of Belgian Dutch and speech production disorders with specific emphasis on the relationship between Foreign Accent Syndrome, Dysarthria and Apraxia of speech. His latest research focuses on dysprosody and the phonetic description of dysarthric speech. These research projects are carried out in close collaboration with the Neurolinguistics Department of the University of Brussels and Middelheim General Hospital (Antwerp).  Jo is a member of the International Phonetic Association, the World Federation of Neurology (Working Group on Aphasia and Cognitive Disorders) and the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics.

Jo's research has been published in, among others, Journal of Phonetics, Speech Communication, Language and Speech, Journal of the International Phonetic Association, Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, Behavioural Neurology and Cortex. In addition, Jo is the editor of the Edinburgh IPA Archive, which is a historic collection of 70 language samples of 'The North Wind and the Sun' with phonetic annotations  (www.ua.ac.be/edinburghipa).
