Barbara Dodd
Professor – child speech, Joint Head of Department
Biography
Barbara Dodd is a speech and language therapist whose research focuses on typical and atypical phonological development.
She has taught in clinical departments at Newcastle University and University Queensland and in the School of English and Linguistics at Macquarie University in Sydney. Barbara has been involved in the development of new curricula for educating speech-language therapy clinicians in England, Ireland and Australia.
From 2004 to 2009 she was an ARC Research Fellow at the University of Queensland, but is now full-time at the Department of Language and Communication Sciences at City University.
She is the author of books on the differential diagnosis of children with speech difficulties and bilingualism, and a lead author on assessments for speech disorder and phonological awareness. Barbara is a member of the Bilingual Affairs Committee of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics and a Fellow of Speech Pathology Australia.
Research Interests
Barbara's research interests focus on the characteristics of phonological acquisition of children, particularly those with a phonological disorder, including children who are bilingual, deaf or intellectually impaired. Her research has included clinical efficacy and effectiveness studies of intervention programs linked to diagnostic categories of phonological difficulties
Her current research focuses on:
- executive functions and phonological disorders
- auditory-visual speech perception and phonological disorders
- the effect of bilingualism of different language pairs on phonological development and phonological awareness
- efficacy of intervention, especially the influence of service delivery factors
- two-year olds' phonology: predicting disorder
- differentiation of language disorder and disadvantage
