Dr Patty Kostkova
Head of CeRC
Overview
Dr Patty Kostkova a Senior Research Fellow and a Head of City ehealth Research Centre (CeRC) at City University, London, UK. She received an MSc in Computer Science from the Charles University, Prague and was awarded a PhD in Computer Science from The City University, London, UK. She has built CeRC into a thriving multidisciplinary research centre with expertise in computer science, information science and public health, collaborating with national and international partners on grants funded by prestigious bodies such as the European Commission, European Centre European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), and the World Health Organization.
In recent years, she was appointed a consultant at WHO responsible for the design and development of information systems for international surveillance, to conduct a specification of an evaluation framework and a knowledge management strategy for the GLOBE portal run by the Foundation Merieux. She was also appointed a Consultant for the European Centre European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Stockholm to perform a situational analysis and scientific strategy for mapping of microbiological and public health expertise in the EU.
In 2010, with Connie St Louis and the Centre for Better Managed Health and Social Care, Patty won the Best Interdisciplinary Research Project prize in the 4th Annual City University research competition.
Media Coverage
Patty's media coverage includes: Medi1TV coverage of the 3rd eHealth 2010 in Casablanca December 2010), 3rd ehealth and twitter for epidemic surveillance reported by AFP (15th December 2010) and replicated across more than 30 online news outlets including The Independent Online, Bangkok Post, Yahoo News, The Sydney Morning Herald and France 24. E-Bug (BBC Health online 2008, regional BBC press), Global Handwashing Day in 2008 and 2009 (over 20 press articles), "Twitter could act as early warning system for epidemics" (Agence France-Presse - AFP Apr 13, 2010), also on The Malaysian Insider (14th April 2010), Dose.ca, The Vancouver Sun, The Strait Times (Singapore Press), redorbit.com and other international media
Research
Research interests
Patty's research interests include using social networks and Web 2.0 tools for epidemic intelligence, outbreak detection and early warning systems, medical digital libraries and semantic web, health care ontologies, educational games and the evaluation of Internet digital libraries and their impact on healthcare outcomes.
Set up in 2000, Patty runs the National electronic Library of Infection (www.neli.org.uk) family of projects providing real-world services to over 40 000 medical professionals per month and is a unique test bed for the centre's research activities. In particular, the global portal National Resource of Infection Control (NRIC) is the leading resource in infection control collaborating with IFIC, WHO, ICAN and APIC. Visit the full list of CeRC projects.
Patty edited several journals, is a regular TCP member for international conferences and journals in the domain of ehealth and recently became a Co-editor in Chief of Springer Verlag ICST Transactions on e-Health, ISSN# 2032-9296. She published over 90 peer-reviewed technical papers at international journals and conferences, and over 50 peer-reviewed abstracts at medical events, and wrote a book chapter. Professional Activities and Memberships
Patty is an Advisory Board member on the ECDC Knowledge Management Working Group, a member of journals editorial boards and international conference technical programme committees. In addition to being the Scientific and General Chair of ehealth 2009 held in Istanbul, Turkey in September 2009 and the Scientific Co-Chair of eHealth 2010 held in Casablanca, Morocco, her coordination activities include chairing the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Healthcare Digital Libraries Workshop (HDL 2003-05) held in conjunction with ECDC 2003-05, two international ehealth Workshops taking place in London in 2002 and 2004 and a healthcare ontology workshop held at the MedInfo 2007 conference in Brisbane Australia in 2007. Visit the CeRC events' page for a full list.
A regular speaker invited by prestigious institutions such as the Epidemic Intelligence Experts Meeting, ECDC, Yahoo Research!, WHO, NHS, and EC Joint Research Centre, Italy, she was invited to deliver the keynote at the HCSNet Workshop on Social Technology Applications for Health and Medicine, Melbourne, VIC, Australia in September 2009, gave the keynote talks at the "Personalisation for ehealth" Workshop 2009 (held in conjunction with AIME 2009, Verona, Italy), and the keynote at the "Knowledge Management for Healthcare Processes" Workshop 2008 (held in conjunction with ECAI 2008, Patras, Greece). Recently, Patty was invited by BMJ as the "Idea Champion" presenting the future of social networks in healthcare at a theme session seeking to find "The idea most likely to make the biggest impact on healthcare by 2020" (the NHS Innovation Expo 2011, Excel, London, March 2011).
