Workshops for Research Degree Students

These workshops are open to all postgraduate students within the School.  If you are interested in attending any of the following workshops then please register with Dr Paul Godin.

Wed 9th March 2011  -  1.30-4.30  -  Room 3F, West Smithfield
Writing for publication
Dr Julia Jones

Writing for publication is like riding a bike, it gets easier with practice.  However, getting started is often an anxious time, with avoidance activities such as house cleaning a common symptom!  The aim of this workshop is to share some top tips about the process of writing, starting with initial ideas, deciding who you are writing for, how to structure an article and what to do when writer's block occurs.  The workshop will include some group work and participants are encouraged to bring with them a peer-reviewed article that they think is well written and they enjoyed reading.

Wed 13th April 2011  -  1.30-4.30  -  Room 3F, West Smithfield
In-Depth Interviewing
Dr Emma Jane Berridge & Dr Paul Godin

The in-depth interview should not be a series of questions and answers but more like a conversation (but with a purpose) in which themes are introduced for discussion. This workshop shall explore the following. How does the qualitative researcher decide on whom to sample? How does s/he engage in conversation with participants? How does the researcher direct the interview and allow him/herself to be usefully taken in alternative directions? How is the interview transcribed, coded and analysed? What computer software packages are available to assist the researcher?

Wed 11th May 2011  -  1.30-4.30  -  Room 3F, West Smithfield
Involving patients and the public in research
Dr Paul Godin

The involvement of patients and members of the public in research has come to be regarded as a 'good thing' in recent decades. It is variously said that their participation improves the quality of research and/or that users have a right to be involved. This workshop will explore the roots of patient and public involvement in research outlining related ideas and practices from within disability studies, educational theory, liberation theology, deliberative democracy and public sociology. The practicalities of involving service users in research will also be explored through consideration of examples of participatory research.
