What is aphasia?

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that can affect an individual's ability to speak, understand spoken words, read or write. This is caused by damage to the parts of the brain that control language. Most people who have aphasia developed the condition following a stroke.

Aphasia affects each individual differently, varying in severity and in the skills it disrupts and spares. It can have a profound impact on a person's life, affecting their relations with family and friends, their ability to work and to pursue their hobbies and interests.

How we can help

The City Aphasia Research Clinic at the Compass Centre offers individually tailored programmes of therapy to people with aphasia. Participants and therapists start by discussing how aphasia affects that person's life and what their main concerns are. In addition, assessments are carried out to investigate each person's strengths and difficulties in using language and to measure change.

Therapy aims to reduce the impact of aphasia on a person's life through improving language skills and/or developing alternative ways of communicating. The goals of therapy are agreed by the participant and the therapist and therapy is typically carried out twice a week over a two-month period.

Each individual case of therapy is carefully designed and evaluated using a research design. These single case studies will increase our understanding of how different therapies can help people with aphasia. The clinic is open all year and during the university term-times students are involved in running the clinic.
